Around the World in 36 Weeks.
I began this unit the first week of school. We started at 0 degrees longitude on the world map and moved 10 degrees each week. The class gets to "visit" a new country, learn a little bit about their culture, customs, folklore, animals, geography and history. There are many opportunities for great art projects, writing, math and reading.
We have a special bulletin board at the back of the classroom to display where we are on the world map, show pictures, display artwork and books about each country. I have used this unit with great success and hope you can benefit from the work I have done. The students have been very enthusiastic and have brought in postcards, items, maps and even visitors to speak about the country of the week.I have tied this in with my weekly spelling units but you may use any area that you wish. The students are also learning about continents, countries, longitude and latitude as we move around the globe.
For each country I made up a weekly activity that students must complete. These included such activities as German crossword puzzles, making a family tree in Russian, French menus, writing letters using Australian slang, Camels factsheets, Egyptian heiroglyphics, Lapland reindeer, and making an African Mancala game. I am constantly updating my resources and ideas for each country. Sometimes we do an additional piece of artwork specific to the region.
It's fun and the kids LOVE it!
